paddy's market

this is a busy and very strange street market during the week, mostly selling other folks rubbish ( and i mean rubbish!). but as you may have noticed from previous posts i prefer not to have people in my work.
it was one of those days with very heavy rain followed by brillant winter sun, which can create some fantastic light for photography.

It's just my personal taste, I know, but I find this a bit dull without people. People bring life to an image, it gives your scene expression.
So unfortunately I don't like this one. It doesn't say anything. Can you relate to that?

i guess quite often a picture can be a bit more personal. a lot of my work is documenting glasgow and areas with local history, there has been a street market here for over 150 years. i agree perhaps one person going out of the far left may add some life, then again i know and can sense the life and folk who have passed through here.

That's exactly what it is: documentary photography. And it's as good as any other form of photography, but it's just that I like expressive photography more. It's more difficult, and, at least to me, more satisfying.
I also think that this photo will mean a lot to people who know the place, but less to people who don't know it. I try to make photos that anyone can relate to. And god knows I often fail.
