Mod transfer question

Hey Nitsa,

Cool new images! I want to make sure I understand this before I make a big mess.

Step 1: Flip image and print onto REGULAR printer paper (not photo paper?)
Step 2: Apply mod podge to print and press onto photo paper, holding them together until it dries
Step 3: Soak in water and peel off the original sheet of paper

Is that it? Step 1 is the main one I'm interested in...

hey, I'm glad you're interested in the actual process! (so far everybody who emailed me was simply interested in buying a copy of the transfer :)

you've pretty much got it right. the photo should be printed into a standard paper, not a photo paper.
in step 3 you first peel off the paper and then soak it in water to peel off the rest of it.

good luck and Let me know how it works out for you. (it took me a few tries before I got it right)

I'm trying it out right now...moderate success but I managed to wipe off all of the print when I did the cleaning part. Oops!

I have a couple more drying so we'll see if they work better. I did some research and it looks like you can also do this with transparencies, which eliminates the need for a cleaning phase. That might be easier, but then it may not look as good either.

Well, all I have to say is that I'm not very good at this technique! But it's pretty fun. And a bit messy.

my guess is that you are transferring the image into a photo paper that does not hold ink very well so you should probably be a little more gentle with it and don't soak the whole print in water. just wet your fingers in warm water and peel it off gently.

I'm thinking I may be using too weak of a transfer paper actually. My photo paper is quite good stuff -- but my regular paper is garbage. So, when I peel off the original, it just turns to shreds, leaving way too much paper attached to the transferred image.

Oddly, the first one I tried was my most successful attempt. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention to how I did it...it was meant as more of a trial!

I have found that I can darken the final "print" by soaking the print in water AGAIN, then while that is still wet, applying a coat of mod podge over the whole thing. It really increases the contrast, but when it finally dries again, any remaining paper on the front will really show.

Actually it could probably be used to good effect on some images as it is a very surreal look.

Yes, I think if you have any paper remaining it can add to the imperfect/distress look of the whole image which is the main idea behind the process.
(As it is, at some point I'm going to add paint and some mixed media elements to the whole thing.)
Anyway, I'm going to try using a photo paper instead of the light weight paper and see how it turns out.
I'll keep you posted of course :)

I have one that I did using heavy matte paper...it transferred ok but there is still a LOT of paper to remove. Slow process but I think it's working out ok. I may stick with that on future attempts.

Update on teh matte paper -- it did work pretty well. However it was a LOT of work to clean off the paper from the trasferred image. But, soaking for a few hours and then some persistance was all it needed...no real tearing or anything like that.

We'll see how it looks after it dries.
