Just curious

Lately when I am taking photos downtown, security from the buildings tell me not to take pictures. I always tell them to mind their own business and they always call the police. The police always come and tell them that it is ok for me to take the pictures. I just wonder if it is just me running into stupid aggressive security people or if others have experienced this.

I'm not quite sure I understand; are you taking the pictures inside the buildings?
I haven't had such experience myself, but maybe being a woman makes the difference.

I've heard this happens a lot to some people...

StreetScan, you should be more polite to the security. They are only doing what they think is their job -- they are wrong, but they're still not trying to cause trouble. You are asking for trouble when you say "mind your own business," which is very rude. It is true that you are very much within your rights to take pictures of buildings FROM OUTSIDE -- where you are on public property. However, if you make a scene about it, you will just invite trouble. You are better off being polite and just explaining to the security that you're just taking a couple of pictures for fun, and then you will be on your way.

Nitsa, I would guess that being a woman does help you out a bit. I often worry when I'm taking street photos, because I'm a rather large 6'4 -- I draw a little attention even without a camera. I have never been harassed when shooting photos, but I know a lot of people who have. This is one reason that I try to bring a friend along when I'm going shooting, because that makes me look less troublesome.

Nista I posted some examples of the type of pictures I took when approached. Conglom I am polite, when on the streets, however these guys are programmed to accomplish their job no matter what. They do not listen to reason, they just act. It takes the police to back them off. However, I can be rude if politeness doesn't work. It can piss me off cause these are my streets, and this is where I live. Anyway this is not a big deal for me cause I just keep moving anyway, I was just curious if anyone else was experiencing this.

Here in the UK you can take pictures in the street with out too much hassle, I guess if I stood next to the MI5 building snapping away the police might ask questions!

I take the approach to do a walk by, then loop back round the block/through a shop. and snap the picture on the 2nd run and keep moving.

Not always practical but it does cut down on the "guy lurking with camera" experience!

Just about the examples posted.
The first one is really excellent. I like it a lot!

About the discussion. Always remain polite and calm when explaining your intentions and purposes.
