where's the love?

Come on people, I need my fix of photos...where is everyone?

I just got back from a week in New York with my three new girlfriends, the digital rebel XTI, the Ikon, and my somewhat eccentric Holga. Having never used any of the three until this trip, it was bound to be interesting...of course the digital camera performed as well as expected, but the other two were more interesting. I just got the negatives back today and have been scanning them in for some time (took a while to figure out the film scanning process).

Can't say they came out great, but I wasn't expecting much -- since neither camera has a REAL viewfinder, I didn't even know what I was actually taking pictures of! The Holga lets you look through a fake lens, but the Ikon only has a little box that hangs in space -- and the view you see in that is MUCH more zoomed in than what the film actually records.

I'm redoing my website again while I master the Ruby language, but hopefully I'll have it back up soon and can show off some of my work. It was an adventure, I have to say. This was the first trip where I felt challenged by the photography, and I think that's due in large part to the fact that I actually had to think some. And that is always a good thing.

are you insane?

the Ikon has a stunning viewfinder! Rangefinders have REAL viewfinders, while SLR's don't.

my ikon is a 60+ year old folding camera -- it does have a small crystal device that serves as a viewfinder, but I'm not yet in the habit of looking down at the camera while shooting -- I like having my eyes pointed the same direction as the lens. Also, it's old and scratched up and doesn't really yield a good image of what is being shot.

There's a pop-up thing on it that may be intended for use as a viewfinder but the view through that is so far off from what the film records that I think it's actually got another purpose, possibly to hold an old flash bulb?

Anyway, I may well be insane -- but this thing does NOT have a real viewfinder. But that's ok by me -- I still really dig it.

I am thinking of spooling a roll of 35mm through it with foam supports holding the cartridge in place, like you'd do with a Holga...that would give a serious funky long image. Funky long being a technical term.

A couple of years ago I took a digital and a couple of film cameras along with me when I visited San Franicsco. Not only it turned out to be a debate on which camera to use at any given moment, but mainly I was quite dispaointed with the predictable digital images.
By the way, most members cannot post here anymore (I think) - due to overwhelming number of spam I had to prevent anymore of these posts.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing your new NYC pictures :)

I hate to say it, but I agree -- the digital images are wonderfully clean, crisp, and almost always well exposed, colorful, etc....

The Ikon/Holga shots are anything but that. They aren't even always in focus but they're just more fun to look at.

Personally, I never use more than a single link in the comment I post because doing so can trigger spam catchers if the user has that plugin activated, whereas a single link will not.
